  • Description

SOUTH KOREA'S MILITARY LEADERS ARE FACING MOUNTING OPPOSITION TO THEIR PLAN TO CONTINUE THE JUNTA FOR ANOTHER FOUR YEARS. THE CIVILIAN PRESSURE FORCED STRONGMAN GENERAL CHUNG HEE PARK ON MARCH 19 TO WITHDRAW HIS PLAN FOR 12 DAYS.

GENERAL PARK SAID HE WOULD DROP HIS PLAN IF WHAT HE CALLED CORRUPT POLITICIANS WOULD AGREE NOT TO RUN IN THE FORTHCOMING ELECTIONS. HE SAID THE 12-DAY DELAY WOULD GIVE THE CIVILIANS TIME TO WORK OUT THE MATTER AND TIME FOR HIM TO DECIDE WHETHER TO CARRY OUT HIS PLAN.

HIS CHIEF OPPONENTS, EX-PREMIER CHUNG HUH AND EX-PRESIDENT POSUN YUN, SAID IT WAS CIVILIAN RULE AND NOTHING ELSE. BEFORE MEETING GENERAL PARK, BOTH LEADERS HAD TALKS WITH THEIR POLITICAL COLLEAGUES.

MR HUH TOLD JOURNALISTS AFTERWARDS GENERAL PARK "UNILATERALLY BETRAYED AN PUBLIC PLEDGE" HE MADE LAST MONTH TO RETURN CIVILIANS TO POWER. "PARK," HE SID, "HE INJURED THE COUNTRY INTERNATIONALLY AND BEFOOLED THE PEOPLE."
MR YUN WARNED THAT GENERAL PARK'S ATTEMPTS TO PROLONG MILITARY RULE WOULD DEVELOP INTO A SERIOUS SITUATION. BOTH LEADERS MET FOR TALKS BEFORE GOING TO THE SUPREME COUNCIL BUILDING TO SEE GENERAL PARK.
