The Lebanese Government is one of many in the Arab world to welcome the nationalisation - which has been hailed as a gesture of Arab strength at the time of the sixth anniversary of the outbreak of the Middle East war.
One of two major pipelines from the iraq Petroleum Company's field has its terminal in Lebanon and when Iraq announced nationalisation of the company the export of oil from the pipeline was temporarily banned by lebanon. The demonstrators in Beirut carried a large mode of an oil rig through the streets upon which the initial of the company - IPC - are made to represent the slogan "Imperialist Pig Company".
