  • Description

President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania arrived in the Finnish capital of Helsinki on Sunday (9 May) on the final leg of his five-nation European tour.

He was met at the airport by Finland's head of state, President Urho Kekkonen and several other Finnish government officials.

President Nyerere attacked the vast inequalities between rich and poor countries. He said charity is not the basis on which to overcome poverty. Economic aid, even on good terms and without political strings, was no solution to the problems posed by the present international economic structure.

He said the present economic order automatically transferred wealth form poor to rich countries -- the poor sell at cheap prices and buy at dear prices.

Dr. Nyerere said the gap between rich and poor became greater every month and would continue to do so unless deliberate and panned corrective action was taken.

President Kekkonen told President Nyerere that the day was near when the last remnants of colonialism in Africa would be eliminated. Finland had always supported justified pursuits of the national liberation movements and Helsinki had a deep regard for Tanzania's efforts to create an egalitarian society.

A growing number of finns saw Tanzania ass a young, proud, dynamic nation, striving for self-reliance and prosperity despite overwhelming odds, he said.

President Nyerere had already visited Denmark, Norway, Sweden and West Germy and he discussed the current situation in Rhodesia, in the light of the visit of U.S. Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger.
