  • Description

PRESIDENT JOSEPH MOBUTU OF CONGO-KINSHASA VISITED A COMMANDO TRAINING CENTRE AT NAMUR TODAY (WEDNESDAY) DURING HIS THREE-DAY STATE VISIT TO BELGIUM.

HE WAS ACCOMPANIED TO THE COMMANDO TRAINING SCHOOL BY PRINCE ALBERT OF LIEGE.

PRESIDENT MOBUTU'S VISIT TO BELGIUM MARKS A TURNING POINT IN THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE CONGO AND ITS FORMER COLONIAL RULER. RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES HAVE BEEN FREQUENTLY STRAINED SINCE INDEPENDENCE.

AT THE COMMANDO CENTRE PRESIDENT MOBUTU SAW SOLDIERS TRAINING ON OBSTACLE COURSES AND INSPECTED THEIR EQUIPMENT.

EARLIER, THE PRESIDENT HAD BEEN GUEST OF HONOUR AT A STATE DINNER WHERE PRINCE BAUDOUIN HAD SAID THAT BELGIUM HAD TO ADOPT ITSELF TO A NEW KIND OF RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CONGO, ONE OF CONFIDENCE, RESPECT AND ACTIVE CO-OPERATION NOT ONLY IN THE WORK OF MEN, BUT ALSO IN INVESTMENT.

THE PRESIDENT'S VISIT HAS BEEN MARKED BY ELABORATE SECURITY ARRANGEMENTS AGAINST DEMONSTRATIONS BY STUDENTS AND FORMER RESIDENTS OF THE CENTRAL AFRICAN STATE WHO HAVE BEEN AGITATING RECENTLY OVER THE LOSSES THEY SUSTAINED AFTER BELGIUM GRANTED INDEPENDENCE IN 1960.
