Background: After ten years of terrorist attacks, the Italian government has now instituted perhaps the toughest security measures in Western Europe. Soldiers regularly search pedestrians, armed police guard public, official and the headquarters of the political parties. The most fashionable suburbs of cities like Rome now bristle with private security systems and guard dogs while the American military base at Vicenza is ringed with heavily armed troops. However, recent surveys of young Italians shows many of them are sympathetic to the aims of the terrorists and are opposed to the increased security measures.
