  • Description

King Faisal of Saudi Arabia tried to revive the idea of a summit meeting between Egypt, Jordan, Syria and the Palestine Liberation Organisation (P.L.O.) during his three-nation Arab tour which ended on Monday (20 January).

The King left Aswan in Upper Egypt after two days of talks with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat.

Arab diplomatic sources in Syria -- the first stop on his tour -- said the Monarch was trying to arrange a meeting between the four parties in his capital, Riyadh. The meeting was suggested more than two months ago, but has been delayed by disagreements between the P.L.O., Jordan, Egypt and Syria.

After their talks President Sadat and King Faisal expressed concern at continuing Israeli raids in southern lebanon and also called for a joint African-Arab summit to strengthen co-operation.

The King also announced an immediate aid grant of 43 million pounds sterling (100 million dollars) to help Egypt's suppliers of essential goods and commodities.

Saudi Arabia gave Egypt 130 million pounds sterling (300 million U.S. dollars) last August to help reconstruction work in the Suez Canal and pledged to invest a further 70 million pounds sterling (161 million U.S. dollars) three months later.
