Background: The Bulgarian Premier, Todor Jivkov, had talks with President Houari Boumedienne of Algeria in Algiers on Sunday (August 2) when he stopped over for two-hours on his way home from Cuba.
The Bulgarian delegation, headed by Premier Jivkov, was returning from an official visit to Cuba. Included in the party were the Minister of Commerce Peko Takov, Radenko Grigorov of the Foreign Ministry and General Slavtcho Transki, the Vice-Minister of Defence.
The Bulgarian officials were welcomed at the airport by President Boumedienne. The two heads of state then held brief talks on bilateral relations and some international problems.
The visit by the Bulgarian delegation to Cuba was officially described as an effort to improve friendly relations between the two countries. The Bulgarian President also extended an invitation to the Cuban Premier, Dr. Fidel Castro, to visit Bulgaria.
The Cuban and Bulgarian leaders informed each other on bilateral problems and discussed some international topics.
