  • Description

The Royal Hint, London, recently....and it is the end of another era. Into the melting pot go most of Britain's surviving farthings, the smallest denomination of the currency, and now virtually valueless. On January the 1st, they will no longer be legal tender, for the Treasury has announced that "the farthing has now outlived its usefulness".

But as the coins dissolve into shapeless metal it is perhaps a consolation for the nostalgic that several million farthings are still unaccounted for at present - but seemingly safe from the furnace.

Molten metal pours into moulds, and the farthings lose their identity in anonymous metal ingots - all that remains of a coin that first came into use three centuries ago.

As a last chapter in the farthing story, the ingots may be sued to make new pennies - presumably four old farthing's worth for one new penny.
