  • Description

United State President Gerald Ford arrived at Rambouillet Castle just outside Paris on Saturday (15 November) and held an unscheduled round of talks with French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing before taking part in the weekend's sex-nation economic summit meeting. No details of the topic discussed were released.

When the President arrived at Rambouillet, he was first greeted by an official of the French Presidency inside the castle's heavy iron gates.

He then went to the steps of the castle where he exchanged a few words with the French President before entering.

A detachment of 12 sabre-carrying republican guards on horseback formed a guard of honour.

Police then closed the castle gates and secured its four locks.

Addressing the other Heads of Government later, Mr. Ford said they should set as their objectives vigorous economic expansion, high levels of employment in 1977 and a reduction in the inflation rate coupled with an increase in world trade.

By mentioning 1997, the American leader confirmed forecasts that unemployment in the six countries could not be cut substantially next year and that it would take another year before major inroads could be made on this problem.

The six countries taking part in the summit meeting are Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States.
