  • Description

Corruption charges against a former Group Captain in the Malaysian Air Force in connection with the purchase of Northrop aircraft are due to be heard in the Kuala Lumpur High Court on the 3rd January. Retired Group Captain Ahmad Shah bin Hashim is to be tried on a number of counts, involving well over 200,000 U.S. dollars.

SYNOPSIS: At the Senior Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur on Monday (19 December) Group Captain Shah pleaded not guilty to the charges, and two of the five counts were amended. Group Captain Shah was allowed home on bail, which had been set at the equivalent of over 10,000 U.S. dollars. All the charges have been brought against Shah under Malaysia's Prevention of Corruption Act. It's been alleged that Shah accepted a commission of one per cent on the sale price of F-5 type aircraft from the Malaysian representative of the Northrop Corporation-which manufactured the planes. In return, it is alleged that Shah would recommend to the government the purchase of the aircraft for the air force. The other charges refer to other Northrop planes which, it is said, Shah also recommended the government should buy. As he left the court, Shah made no comment on the charges.
