  • Description

Hundreds of women responded to a call from one of the largest trade unions in France and demonstrated in Paris on Friday (8 March) in support of higher pay for women. The Communist led General Confederation of workers had urged workers to observe a national women's action week between 4 March and the 8 March.

Although other demonstrations had been planned throughout the week in other centres throughout France, the largest was organised for Friday in Parie. Hundreds of women and their supporters gathered in the streets of the capital, and marched with banners and slogans demanding that women workers should be paid more. One out of every two women in the country earn barely the national monthly minimum wage.

The demonstration is being regarded as a "curtain-raiser" for next Thursday's (14 March) day of "national action" which has been called for by the three largest trade unions in the country. The demonstrations planned to be held then are designed to reinforce the unions' demands for a series of wage deals in the public sector that will include automatic purchasing power guarantees pegged to the cost of living.
