Background: WHILE TRAVELLING BACK TO THEIR COUNTRY HOME THIS EVENING (SATURDAY) AFTER ATTENDING SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL'S STATE FUNERAL IN LONDON, THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF GLOUCESTER WERE INVOLVED IN A CAR ACCIDENT. BOTH WERE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL, BUT THE DUKE - WHO IS QUEEN ELIZABETH'S UNCLE, AND EIGHTH IN LINE OF SUCCESSION TO THE THRONE - LEFT AFTER TREATMENT FOR CUTS AND BRUISES. THE DUCHESS, REPORTED TO HAVE FAIRLY SEVERE HEAD INJURIES, IS BEING KEPT IN HOSPITAL AT LEAST FOR THE NIGHT. SHE IS TO HAVE AN X-RAY EXAMINATION. ALTHOUGH NO OFFICIAL STATEMENT HAS YET BEEN ISSUED, THE DUKE'S SECRETARY SAID THE 63-YEAR-OLD DUCHESS MIGHT WELL HAVE BROKEN HER ARM.

THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED 10-MILES (15-KMS) NORTH OF BEDFORD, WHICH IS ITSELF 55-MILES (90-KMS) NORTH OF LONDON. THEY WERE DRIVING TO BARNWELL MANOR, THEIR COUNTRY HOME IN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, WERE ONLY LAST MONTH THE DUCHESS SUFFERED STRAINED LIGAMENTS IN A RIDING ACCIDENT. (BECAUSE OF THIS EARLIER ACCIDENT THE DUCHESS WAS FORCED TO USE A STICK AT TODAY'S CEREMONIES.)
FIRST REPORTS SAID THE ROYAL CAR WAS IN COLLISION WITH ANOTHER CAR BUT THIS WAS NOT IN FACT THE CASE. THE GLOUCASTERS' CAR SKIDDED OFF THE ROAD AND CAME TO REST, UPSIDE DOWN AND FACING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION TO WHICH IT HAD BEEN TRAVELLING. A COACHLOAD OF AMBULANCE MEN, WHO HAD BEEN ON DUTY AT THE FUNERAL, WERE FOLLOWING BEHIND AND WERE ABLE TO GIVE FIRST AID.
