As the 20,204-tons "Southern Cross" berthed at Southampton, U.K., May 16, she was greeted by a strange welcoming committee. Wearing Viking costume, four men from the Shetland Isles-off the north coast of Scotland-were on the dockside to greet more than 60 Shetlanders returning from New Zealand for the Shetland "Hamefarin Week". Some of the "exiles" have not seen their home islands for 40 years.
Special events - including an historical pageant and special dances have been arranged at Lerwick to celebrate the return of "exiles" from overseas and many parts of Britain.
When the visitors arrive back in the islands May 20, crowds will give them a warm welcome. Other planned celebrations include trips around the islands to see islanders mode of life. A pageant depicting life on the islands 70 years ago, and dances will show an island wedding of the 1890's.
