  • Description

The promise that Israel would fight terrorism with all its strength was made to the families of the 11 murdered Israeli athletes who were slain at the Munich Olympics last September. Israel's Deputy Prime Minister, Yigal Allon, made that promise on Tuesday (3 April) at a commemorative tree planting ceremony in the Peace Forest, near Jerusalem.

The athletes were murdered by Palestinian guerrillas during the 1972 Olympics. Mr Allon said there was no other way than to fight terrorism organisations with all the strength available and wherever terrorists were found. It was not important where they acted, he added, or for whom they acted. The absence of positive world reaction against the Munich massacre had, he said, encouraged the Arab guerrillas to carry on their activities. He cited the 36-hour guerrilla take-over of the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok last December and the murder of three diplomats in Khartoum.

SYNOPSIS: Israel's Deputy Prime Minister, Yigal Allon, promised that Israel would continue to fight terrorism with all its strength. He was speaking to relatives of the 11 Olympic athletes murdered last September in Munich. The occasion was the planting of 11 commemorative trees in the Peace Forest near Jerusalem.

Relatives, who plated the Cyprus trees in a new Grove of the Forest, had heard Mr. Allon avow that there was no other way to fight terrorism organisations that with all the strength available and wherever terrorists were found. It was not important, he said, where they acted or for whom they acted. Palestinian guerrillas were responsible for the Munich murders -- murders which shocked the world, temporarily halted the Games and showed the vulnerability of even closely guarded Israelis. Mr. Allon added that the absence of positive world reaction against the Munich massacre had encouraged Arab guerrillas to continue their activities.
