  • Description

Devout Moslems crowded the mosques of Amman in Jordan yesterday (Friday) for prayers to mark the first Friday of Ramadan.

Before the six-day war the centre of the religious celebrations in Jordan were held at the Aksa Mosque in Jerusalem, the third holiest shrine in Islam. But now East Jerusalem is occupied by Israel, the Hussein Grand Mosque in Amman is the centre of the month long Ramadan services.

During the month of Ramadan, Moslems eat only in the hours of darkness. Normally, sunrise and the beginning of fasting is marked by the firing of ceremonial guns. But since the civil war in Jordan authorities have decided that drums must be used instead.

Moslems participating in the prayers kneel on mats or carpets, but for the poor of Amman brown paper often has to do instead.
