SYNOPSIS: It was the second appearance in the dock for Jiang Qing, leader of the "Gang of Four".
The New China News Agency said Madame Mao denied that the special group set up to give false evidence against President Liu was under her direct control. But after evidence was presented, she admitted arranging the persecution of Liu and the false arrest of his American-born wife. Lie died in prison in 1969. His wife was rehabilitated after eleven years of detention.
When a tape recording calling for "death by a thousand cuts" for President Liu was played, Jiang Qing admitted it was he voice. The judge said the speech was made to Peking Opera artists. In the recording she allegedly called Liu Shaoqi a counter-revolutionary who in her own words was "rotten to the core...a big traitor and a big spy" and boasted of her responsibility in what she called "the top case".
According to Chinese radio, Mao's widow admitted signing arrest orders for eleven other people. There of them died in prison while allegedly being tortured to export confessions to frame Liu. She had charged Madame Liu with being a secret agent for the United States, Japan and the Nationalist Party of Taiwan. Chinese television reported that this tribunal will now be split into different chambers. This is likely to provide greater secrecy in Madame Mao's interrogation.
