  • Description

Yet another day of violence in Seoul, South Korea, Nov 24, when 300 unmarried Bhuddist monks clashed with truncheon-swinging policemen outside the city's Supreme Court building. The monks were protesting against an attempt in the courts to settle a seven-year old controversy and allow married monks to return to the temples from where they were expelled by the Syngman Rhee regime.

More than 20 people were hurt as the celibate monks - supported by a number of unmarried nuns - struggled with police blocking the entrance. Many demonstrators were arrested and taken to waiting trucks.

This direct action by the monks - who had also participated in hunger strikes - followed a Supreme Court direction to the Seoul Appellate Court to retry a civil case between celibate and married monks.
