Production at the new Firestone tyre factory in Nairobi began this week with a basic staff. The factory, which was build at a cost of nearly six million pounds will eventually be manned by 120 workers, and will cater mainly for the home market. Plans are in hand to export tyres to Uganda once the output has caught up with local demand. The Kenyan Government is supporting the venture, and helping protect the industry by restricting the importation of other motor tyres and raw materials for other sources. The company has undertaken to employ and train as many Kenyans at the plant as it can. The tyres, which will be marketed at the same prices as existing brands, are being made from Malaysian rubber and American synthetic fibre.
