WORK HAS BEGUN ON ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ROAD LINKS IN THAILAND. IT IS?

  • Description

WORK HAS BEGUN ON ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ROAD LINKS IN THAILAND. IT IS A JOINT THAI-AUSTRALIAN PROJECT TO CONSTRUCT 57 MILES (90 KMS) OF ALL-WEATHER ROAD WHICH WILL BECOME PART OF THE ASIAN HIGHWAY CONNECTING SOUTH EAST ASIA WITH THE MIDDLE EAST AND EUROPE.

THE ROAD, WHICH WILL PASS THROUGH THE RICH BUT MOUNTAINOUS COUNTRY OF NORTH-WEST THAILAND, IS BEING BUILT UNDER THE COLOMBO PLAN AND WILL COST 15-MILLION DOLLARS (US). AUSTRALIA IS PAYING ONE-THIRD OF THE COST AND THAILAND THE REMAINDER.

ENGINEERS ESTIMATE IT WILL TAKE FIVE YEARS TO COMPLETE, NEED FIVE-MILLION TRUCK-LOADS TO SHIFT EARTH AND ROCK, AND GIVE WORK TO 500 ENGINEERS, PLANT OPERATORS AND LABOURERS.

THE ROAD WILL RUN FROM TAK TO THE VILLAGE OF MAE SOD ON THE BURMESE BORDER, AND LINK THE FRIENDSHIP HIGHWAY IN THAILAND WITH ANOTHER SECTION OF THE ASIAN HIGHWAY (THE A 1) TO BE BUILT IN BURMA.

FOR FOUR MONTHS OF THE YEAR, MAE SOD - AN AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITY - IS CUT OFF FROM THE REST OF THAILAND BY THE MONSOON. TRADE AND AN IMPROVEMENT OF THE LIVING STANDARDS OF THE VILLAGE PEOPLE HAVE PROVED ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE.

BUT THE NEW ROAD WILL MEAN THAT THE BEEF CATTLE, RICE AND VALUABLE TEAK WOOD IN THE MAE SOD AREA CAN REGULARLY REACH MARKETS - ALL THE YEAR.
