    The Organisation of African Unity paid tribute to Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia on Monday (July 24) for his "contributions to unity, solidarity, and peace in Africa".

    At a ceremony in the Ethiopian capital - Addis Ababa - the O.A.U. dedicated a commemorative plaque in Africa Hall on the occasion of the Emperor's eightieth birthday.

    The marble plaque, which measures two metres by one metre and which carries the emblem of the O.A.U., was unveiled by Mr. Nzo Enkangaky, the new administrative secretary-general of the O.A.U. The inscriptions on the plaque are in Amharic, Arabic, English and French.

    Before unveiling the plaque, the new Secretary-General said that Emperor Haile Selassie was a living symbol to the leaders and peoples of Africa in his self-dedication to the cause of Africa.

    In reply, the Emperor said that African leaders had to continue to work together so that African could emerge into complete independence in the shortest possible time.
