  • Description

The six-nation summit meeting of the West African Economic Community (Communaite Economique de l'Afrique de l'Quest, CEAO) began its two-day session in Niger's capital, Niamey, on Sunday (6 April).

One of the CEAO's tasks was to elect a new President, and President Leopold Sedar Senghor of Senegal was voted in, replacing Niger's head of state, Lieutanant-Colonel Seyni Kountche. This formality was concluded at the end of the summit meeting on Tuesday (8 April).

The summit -- called to increase solidarity and development in the area -- was attended by the six member states: Ivory Coast, Upper Volta, Mali, Mauretania, Niger and Senegal.

The CEAO is just over a year old -- formalities for its establishment were concluded in January 1974, although heads of protocol were signed by the six nations involved in early 1970.

The new economic grouping replaced the now-defunct West African Customs Union to embrace wider aspects of trade and economic relations between member states. It not only co-ordinates customs and trade measures, but also the development of policies with regard to transport and communications, cattle and beef, industry, external trade, tourism and energy.

One of its other functions is to develop trade between member states in agricultural and industrial goods and to oversee the growth of regional economic co-operation policies.
