SYNOPSIS: Among these at the meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday (20 April) was the former Mayor of Delhi, Mr. Kedar Nath Sahni. the government of Mrs. Indira Gandhi never disclosed how many people were imprisoned during the emergency, but the Janata Party which defeated Mrs. Gandhi's Congress Party at the recent general elections said 30,000 people had been detained.

At Wednesday's gathering were 2,000 political workers from Delhi itself who had been arrested because of their opposition to the former government's policies. Mrs. Gandhi ordered their release when she announced the general election.

The former prisoners stood in silent prayer for all those detainees who died during their time in prison.

The state of emergency and the detention of so many people was one of the main issues in the election campaign which saw the Congress Party lose power in India for the first time since independence.
