  • Description

Jane Blalock of the United States came from behind with a record five-under-par 69 final round to win the World Ladies' Professional Golf Tournament on Sunday (11 April).

The American successfully defended the title that she won last year against a field of 45 golfers. The competition took place at the 6,490 yard (about 6,000 metres) par-74 Tokyo Yomiuri Country Club on the outskirts of Tokyo.

Going into the final round, Miss Blalock trailed six strokes behind the Japanese leaders, Keiko Matsuda and Nayoko Yoshikawa.

Miss Matsuda shot a disastrous 82 on the final round for a total of 235. Miss Yoshikawa took a three-under-par 77 for a total of 230 and third place overall in the tournament.

Yukiko Toriyama of Japan missed a chance for a playoff with Miss Blalock when she bodied the 18th hole. But her total score of 229 gave her the second place and the million yen (approx. 3,300 US dollars) prize money.

Miss Blalock started the tournament with a six-over-par 82 but her final round of 69 was a course record. It beat the 71 set last year by two other Americans - Laura Baugh and Hollis Stacey. Miss Blalock collected two million yen (Approx. 6,600 US dollars) for her victory.

SYNOPSIS: Tokyo Ymiuri Country Club - where the World Ladies' Professional Golf Tournament was held on Sunday. Keiko Matsuda of Japan was one of the leaders - along with her countrywomen Nayoko Yoshikawa - after the first three rounds.

After a long drive, she chipped on to the green and tried for a three-under-par final round and the lead in the tournament.

But she took two putts for a bogey and second place overall.

America's Jane Blalock - defending her title - started the final round six strokes behind the leaders. She mode-up many of these though with bogeys on five of the holes.

She also took two putts at the 18th. But it gave her a record five-under-par 69 and the tournament title.

Miss Blalock's 69 beat last year's record by two strokes and gave her the two million yen prize money.
