Background: THE NEW LUSAKA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT BEING BUILD AT CHELSTON, FIFTEEN MILES FROM THE ZAMBIAN CAPITAL, IS IN THE FINAL STAGES OF CONSTRUCTION AND IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED AND OPERATIONAL BY APRIL.

THE AIRPORT'S CONTROL CENTRE IS ALREADY PARTLY OPERATIONAL, USING THE MOST MODERN COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT. THIS CENTRE NOW CONTROLS AIR SPACE OVER ZAMBIA AND NEIGHBOURING MALAWI, THUS SAVING ZAMBIA AN ESTIMATED GBP40,000 A YEAR IN AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL FEES, PREVIOUSLY PAID TO RHODESIA.

THE MAIN RUNWAY AT THE AIRPORT HAS BEEN PLANNED WITH AN EYE TO THE FUTURE, FOR ITS 13,000-FOOT LENGTH (3,962 METRE) WILL ACCOMMODATE "JUMBO" JETS.
