Background: For the first time in history millions of televiewers saw a papal coronation in the Basilica of St. Peter's Rome November 4.

The coronation of Pope John .. the 262nd pope .. a four and a half hours-ceremony of splendour filled with ritual going back as far as 1300, climaxed with the crowning on the balcony of the Basilica before more than a quarter million people in St. Peter's Square.

The crowning was seen by viewers in 14 European countries over the Eurovision network.

In a place of honour in the Basilica before the Princess of the Church were the Pope's relatives: his sister, nephews, nieces, brothers.

There, the Pope was borne on the gestatorial chair into the Basilica, high above the heads of the dense worshippers. Over his head was the canopy of ivory silk with golden embroidery.

His heavy brocaded robes completely covered his body and were draped over the sides of the chair.

Pope John gave signs of the Cross with his right hand, a motion that barely reached from his chin to his forehead and across before his eyes.

His arms were concealed under the wide "Falda" cape and only his hands emerged now and then in blessing.

Pope John sat with his head slightly bowed forward. The Sistine Choir one of the foremost in the world, intoned the solemn notes of the first part of the ceremony.

This was the order of the procession: An auditor of the Holy Rota, bearing a spear-headed cross and attended by seven acolytes "of noble birth", precedes the Papal Gendarmeria, in their huge black busbies and white breeches, followed by the Pope's chamberlains, wearing high 16th-century ruffs and chains of gold.

The orders of Papal knighthood follow them, succeeded by the Swiss Guard and a throng of ecclesiastics, bishops, monsignori, sandalled monks, boarded patriarchs of the Eastern Rites and the heads of the great religious orders.

The College of Cardinals brings up the rear, walking in crocodile fashion two-by-two, the youngest first, the older marching next to the papal sedia, separated only by a mass of heralds and mace-bearers who guard the triple tiara - symbol of the church suffering, militant and sanctified - a crown shaped like a bee-hive, set with precious stones and borne on a custion of red velvet.
