  • Description

A crew member of a disabled American spotter aircraft who baled out near Phnom Penh did not have to wait long before he was plucked to safety by an American helicopter.

Sergeant William Silva landed in the middle of a hostile area, but within two-and-a-half hours his position had been pinpointed and a helicopter was hovering overhead to winch him up.

An American military command spokesman said the helicopter encountered heavy enemy fire as Sgt Silva was hoisted to safety. Gunners aboard the helicopter and fighters circling nearby countered with covering fire.

Sgt Silva, who was shaken but unharmed, was flown to Saigon for medical observation. he has since been discharged from hospital.

At the time, he was acting as an interpreter aboard a forward air control aircraft. He baled out when ground fire killed the pilot who was directing air strikes against Communist forces west of Phnom Penh.
