SYNOPSIS: THE APOLLO SPACECRAFT LAUNCHED (SCHEDULED TO BE LAUNCHED MARCH 25 (WILL BE) AN IMPORTANT TEST OF THE CAPSULE'S ABILITY TO WITHSTAND THE EXTREME TEMPERATURES WHICH BUILD UP AROUND SURFACE OF SPACE CRAFT DURING FINAL REENTRY. THE GIANT SATURN V BOOSTED (WILL BOOST) THE VEHICLE INTO HIGH ORBIT, AT WHICH TIME ON-BOARD ROCKETS (WILL PUSH) THE SPACECRAFT BACK INTO OUR ATMOSPHERE AT 25,000 MILES-AN-HOUR SPEEDS. INSULATING THE SPACECRAFT AGAINST FIVE THOUSAND DEGREE REENTRY TEMPERATURES IS A HEAT SHIELD DEVELOPED BY AVCO CORPORATION IN LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS, AVCO BUILDS THE SHIELD AROUND ALL THREE SECTIONS OF THE CAPSULE AFT, CREW CABIN, AND FORWARD SECTION. FIBREGLASS HONEYCOMB STRIPS ARE FITTED AROUND SPACECRAFT STAINLESS STEEL OUTER SHELL TO FORM THE BASE OF HEAT SHIELD.

HONEYCOMB MUST BE PLACED AROUND ALL OPENINGS, INCLUDING CREW ENTRANCE HATCH, AND CAREFULLY CUT TO SIZE.

SPECIAL TOOLS ARE REQUIRED TO FIT HONEYCOMB AROUND ROCKET NOZZLES. HONEYCOMB PANELS ARE HEAT BONDED TO SPACECRAFT IN LARGE OVEN. SPACECRAFT GOES INTO TEMPERATURE-CONTROLLED ROOM.

WHERE TECHNICIANS SEPARATELY "GUN" EACH HONEYCOMB CELL WITH PLASTIC-LIKE ABLATIVE MATERIAL--
THE CORE OF THE APOLLO HEAT SHIELD. PRE-HEATED CARTRIDGES ARE INSERTED INTO GUNS RESEMBLING DRILLS AND USED WHILE THE MATERIAL IS STILL SOFT.

BECAUSE OF ITS GREAT DIMENSIONS, THE AFT SECTION GOES ON A VERTICAL RIG FOR GUNNING. AFTER GUNNING, CAPSULE GOES BACK INTO OVEN WHERE HEAT SHIELD IS BAKED HARD. A HARDENED CREW CABIN IS IN THE BACKGROUND.

THE HARDENED HEAT SHIELD IS MACHINED ON AN OUTSIZE LATHE. GRINDING WHEEL CONTOURS SURFACE TO THICKNESSES EXACT TO A THOUSANDTH OF AN INCH.

BECAUSE REENTRY HEATS VARY ACROSS THE SPACECRAFT, THICKNESSES ALSO VARY. HERE AN AFT SECTION IS MACHINED. THE AFT SECTION POSITIONED ON SPACECRAFT TO ENTER ATMOSPHERE FIRST, BEARS THE BRUNT OF REENTRY HEAT. ASTRONAUTS RIDE IN COMPARTMENT IMMEDIATELY ABOVE. GRINDING ACTION IS ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED.

ROLLS OF COMPUTER-TAPE ARE PROGRAMMED FOR DOZENS OF DIFFERENT MEASUREMENTS. AFTER GRINDING OPERATION, EACH SECTION IS SANDPAPERED BY HAND TO CATCH THE SMALLEST ROUGH SPOTS. THICKNESS OF HEAT-SHIELD IS CAREFULLY CHECKED WITH A MEASURING DEVICE WHICH REGISTERS TO FRACTIONS OF AN INCH.

THE COMPLETED HEATSHIELD IS X-RAYED INCH BY INCH AND, AFTER PASSING INSPECTION. THE APOLLO IS FLOWN BACK TO NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION IN DOWNEY, CALIFORNIA. THERE THE CAPSULE IS ASSEMBLED AND JOINED WITH THE REST OF THE SPACECRAFT.
