  • Description

FOUR TIMES A DAY, A HOUSEWIFE IN SALISBURY, SOUTHERN RHODESIA, PREPARES TWO MAMMOTH FEEDING BOTTLES FOR THE LATEST ADDITION TO HER FAMILY - RUPERT, A BABY RHINOCEROS. RUPERT - THOUGHT TO BE ONLY SIX WEEKS OLD - WAS RESCUED FROM AN ISLAND IN THE KARIBA LAKE.

THE NATIONAL PARKS DEPARTMENT TRANSPORTED HIM FROM KARIBA,BUT DECIDED THE YOUNG ORPHAN COULD NOT BE EXPOSED TO THE COLD IN THE McILWAINE NATIONAL PARK. SO A MEMBER OF THE GOVERNMENT'S VETERINARY RESEARCH LABORATORY, MR. J.B. COUNDY, OFFERED TO UNDERTAKE THE TASK OF LOOKING AFTER HIM.

THE FAMILY GARAGE WAS HASTILY TRANSFORMED INTO "LIVING QUARTERS" FOR RUPERT: BALES OF STRAW WERE BOUGHT AND INFRA-RED LAMPS SET UP TO KEEP HIM WARM. RUPERT - ALREADY WEIGHING 50 LBS. - FRISK AROUND ON THE LAWN LIKE A PUPPY, AND IS BECOMING USED TO MR. COUNDY'S CHICKENS, DUCKS AND COWS. MR. AND MRS. COUNDY'S FOUR CHILDREN ARE ESPECIALLY INTERESTED IN RUPERT'S PROGRESS.

RUPERT FEEDS FROM AN OUTSIZE BOTTLE CONTAINING A SPECIAL PREPARATION OF SKIMMED MILK, LIME WATER, PROTEINS AND PHOSPHATES. IT IS MADE UP EACH DAY IN THE VETERINARY RESEARCH LABORATORY, AND IS BASED ON SAMPLES OF RHINOCEROS MILK. HE IS EXPECTED TO STAY WITH THE FAMILY FOR ABOUT TWO MONTHS ... THEN HE WILL BE CLOSE IN NATIONAL PARKLAND.
