  • Description

When Marines of the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, located a large force of North Vietnamese Army troops in a recent operation near the Demilitarized Zone in South Vietnam, they called in Marine F4B Phantom jets to destroy the enemy positions to their front.

The forward observer with the ground unit uses his radio to call in the jets, and directs them over the target area. Marines on the ground observe the air strikes, keeping the pilots informed of their progress, as the jets streak in low with their load of bombs.

As the jets continue to streak in, one after the other, the Marines on the ground keep a constant vigil to spot any enemy troops who might be flushed from the area.

During this strike Marine jets were credited with killing more than a dozen enemy troops and destroying numerous enemy structure and trench lines.
