Background: PRESIDENT MAKARIOS TOOK THE SALUTE ON WEDNESDAY (1ST APRIL) AT A PARADE IN NICOSIA MARKING THE 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE EOKA UPRISING AGAINST BRITISH RULE WHICH ENDED IN CYPRIOT INDEPENDENCE IN 1960. STANDING NEXT TO PRESIDENT MAKARIOS WAS GENERAL GERAGINIS, COMMANDER OF THE GREEK UNITS STATIONED IN CYPRUS.

THE PRESIDENT DROVE FROM A CHURCH SERVICE TO THE SALUTING BASE IN AN OPEN CAR INSTEAD OF HIS USUAL LIMOUSINE -- A MOVE OBSERVERS INTERPRETED AS A DEMONSTRATION OF HIS CONFIDENCE IN HIS PEOPLE FOLLOWING AN ATTEMPT TO KILL HIM BY MACHINEGUNNING HIS PERSONAL HELICOPTER ON MARCH 8.

POLICE NEVERTHELESS TOOK SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS, POSTING SENTRIES ON ROOFTOPS AND STREETS AROUND THE SALUTING BASE.

ABOUT 20,000 GREEK CYPRIOTS WATCHED THE PARADE, WHICH WAS LED BY EOKA VETERANS CARRYING WREATHS IN MEMORY OF THEIR COMRADES WHO DIED IN THE CAMPAIGN TO UNITE CYPRUS WITH GREECE, AN IDEAL NOW ABANDONED BY THE GOVERNMENT IN FAVOUR OF CONTINUED INDEPENDENCE.

THE PARADE INCLUDED GREEK ARMY UNITS STATIONED IN CYPRUS AND GREEK CYPRIOT TROOPS UNDER REGULAR ARMY OFFICERS ON CONTRACT TO THE CYPRIOT GOVERNMENT.
