  • Description

IN DJAKARTA, 2,000 UNIVERSITY STUDENTS STAGED A PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION ON MONDAY (JULY 10) CALLING FOR FIRM ACTION AGAINST THOSE TRYING TO RESTORE POWER TO DEPOSED PRESIDENT SUKARNO.

THE STUDENTS, MEMBERS OF THE MILITANT ANTI-SUKARNO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS' ACTION FRONT (KAMI), RODE IN TRUCKS TO THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDIUM (INNER CABINET), AND HANDED A RESOLUTION TO THE FINANCE MINISTER, SULTAN HAMENGKU BUWONO.

THE RESOLUTION CALLED ON THE GOVERNMENT OF ACTING PRESIDENT GENERAL SUHARTO TO TAKE FIRM ACTION AGAINST THOSE ATTEMPTING TO RESTORE THE POWER OF DR. SUKARNO.

THE SULTAN TOLD THE DEMONSTRATORS THE GOVERNMENT AGREED WITH THE RESOLUTION AND ACTION WOULD BE TAKEN AGAINST ANYONE WORKING FOR SUKARNO'S COMEBACK.

THIS WAS THE FIRST DEMONSTRATION SINCE SUKARTO WAS STRIPPED OF ALL PRESIDENTIAL POWERS FOUR MONTHS AGO. THE STUDENTS, WHO PLAYED A KEY ROLE IN TOPPLING SUKARNO FROM POWER, HAVE BEEN QUIET FOR SEVERAL MONTHS AND ARE UNDER STRONG PRESSURE FROM THE ARMY TO SUPPORT GENERAL SUHARTO AND NOT TO ATTEMPT TO CRITICISE HIM.
