• Short Summary

THE GREEK PRIME MINISTER, MR. GEORGE PAPADOPOULOS, IN AN ADDRESS TO THE GREEK NATION LAST?

  • Description

THE GREEK PRIME MINISTER, MR. GEORGE PAPADOPOULOS, IN AN ADDRESS TO THE GREEK NATION LAST NIGHT (SATURDAY), PROMISED A "RESHAPING" OF MARTIAL LAW, IMPOSED WHEN THE ARMY SEIZED POWER IN APRIL, 1967. SPEAKING TO AN AUDIENCE OF PROFESSORS, STUDENTS AND REPRESENTATIVES OF YOUTH ORGANISATIONS IN PARLIAMENT BUILDINGS, ATHENS, HE DID NOT ENLARGE ON THE SUBJECT.

THE PRIME MINISTER LIKENED HIS COUNTRY TO A CRIPPLED WHO HAD TO BE BROUGHT SLOWLY ALONG THE ROAD TO CONVALESCENCE.

DURING 1969, HE SAID, HIS GOVERNMENT WOULD DECIDE "ON THE THICKNESS OF THE PLASTER NEEDED BY THE CRIPPLE".

THE 49-YEAR-OLD FORMER ARTILLERY COLONEL, WHO PLOTTED AND CARRIED OUT THE ARMY TAKE-OVER LAST YEAR, SAID MARTIAL LAW WOULD BE "RESHAPED AND MODERNISED WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF PUBLIC SECURITY".

IN A VAGUE REFERENCE TO ELECTIONS, HE SAID HIS GOVERNMENT WOULD CONTINUE THE POLITICAL EDUCATION OF THE GREEK PEOPLE UNTIL THEY WOULD BE ABLE "TO FACE THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE CONSTITUTION AND DECIDE THEMSELVES ON THE FORM OF GOVERNMENT FOR THIS COUNTRY".

HE APPEALED TO GREEKS TO BUY GREEK PRODUCTS TO SAVE THE COUNTRY'S FOREIGN EXCHANGE.
