THE GHANA MILITARY ACADEMY IN ACCRA WAS ON SATURDAY (17 JUNE) PRESENTED WITH A NUMBER OF BOOKS AND PAMPHLETS ON MILITARY TRAINING WORTH 1,000 NEW CEDIS (500 STERLING) AS A GIFT FROM THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT.

THE PRESENTATION WAS MADE BY BRIGADIER A.D.H. IRWIN, COMMANDER OF THE BRITISH JOINT SERVICE TRAINING TEAM IN GHANA.

THE BOOKS AND PAMPHLETS WERE RECEIVED ON BEHALF OF THE ACADEMY AND TRAINING SCHOOL BY THE COMMANDANT, BRIGADIER A.A. AFRIFA.

IN A SPEECH AT THE CEREMONY BRIGADIER IRWIN EXPRESSED THE HOPE THAT THOSE USING THE BOOKS WOULD REALISE THAT WHILE THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED FROM THEM WAS AN INVALUABLE FOUNDATION, IT WAS ONLY A BEGINNING. HE SAID A SOLDIERS REAL WORTH WAS SHOWN BY HIS ABILITY TO APPLY HIS KNOWLEDGE TO MEET ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

BRIGADIER AFRIFA ASSURED BRIGADIER IRWIN THAT THE BOOKS WOULD PLAY A LEADING ROLE IN HIS EFFORTS TO DEVELOP THE MILITARY ACADEMY.

AMONG THOSE PRESENT AT THE CEREMONY WERE BRITISH AND CANADIAN OFFICERS ATTACHED TO THE ACADEMY.

THE ACADEMY, ESTABLISHED IN 1960, TRAINS YOUNG GHANAIANS, WHO WISH TO TAKE UP THE ARMY AS A CAREER, WITH A MINIMUM QUALIFICATION OF GENERAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION AT ORDINARY LEVEL. THE COURSE NORMALLY LAST TWO YEARS.
