  • Description

The Angolan President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos, held talks on Thursday (20 December) in Moscow with the Soviet President Leonid Brezhev and members of the Politburo. President Dos Santos is making his first visit to the Soviet Union since assuming power in September.

SYNOPSIS: He and his delegation arrived in Moscow on Wednesday (19 December) for talks on a wide range of subjects. President Leonid Brezhnev took an active part in these talks, which included bilateral relations and key international issues, including the current situation in Southern Africa.

The basis of good relations between Angola and the Soviet Union was established by the first President of Independent Angola, De. Agostinh??? Neto, who died in a Soviet hospital on the tenth of September.

Relations were cemented in October 1976 with a friendship and cooperation treaty to last twenty years. The treaty declared that both countries would, among other things, develop co-operation in the military sphere 'in the interests of developing their defence capacity'. The Soviet Union was praised for the 'moral, political and material support'.
