  • Description

In Sydney today, two men said goodbye to their wives and then set out in a small dinghy to sail to Port Kambla and back to re-enact the epic voyage of the explorers, Bass and Flinders, one-hundred-and sixty-eight years ago.

Jeff Tonghill, and his companion, Derrick Timmins, are making the voyage in a Heron class dinghy, a little more that eleven feet long, and much smaller than the eighteen foot boat used by Bass and Flinders. If all goes well, they will make only one stop during their voyage - at Flinders Island where they will place an inscribed anchor to mark the occasion.

They set out for the Heads under a stiff North Easterly breeze. Throughout their voyage, they will be accompanied by escort craft in cases of an emergency. The explorers, Toghill and Timmins,
hope to be back in Sydney Sunday afternoon if the weather is good; otherwise they may be away a week or more.
