  • Description

The first shipment of United States relief supplies for victims of Friday's cyclone and tidal-wave disaster in East Pakistan was loaded on to an airliner in chicago yesterday ( Wednesday, 18 November). The airliner is expected to arrive at Dacca, East Pakistan, late today ( Thursday ).

One thousand tents for those left homeless by the disaster were loaded on to a DC 8 airliner in Chicago. It then flew to Bangor, Maine, for 20,000 pounds (9,000 kilos ) of blankets.

The airliner was hand-loaded to make it easier for the Pakistanis to deal with the supplies at the end of the flight. The U.S. Agency for International Development arranged the relief supplies and chartered the airliner to carry them.

The tents and blankets are desperately needed as one of the worst problems of the relief teams in East Pakistan in keeping the disaster survivors warm.

Relief supplies from aborad are steadily piling up in Dacca, but there is a shortage of helicopters in East Pakistan to air-drop them over the isolated areas hit by the cyclone.
