  • Description

Guinean President Sekou Toure met with African delegates at the United Nations on Monday (13 August) to discuss current issues. The Guinean leader is on a one-week private visit to the United States to try to attract more American investment in Guinea and was received by American President Jimmy Carter last Wednesday (8 August).

SYNOPSIS: The Guinean leader took the opportunity to discuss with African delegates to the United Nations the resolutions of the recent Organisation of African Unity (OAU) summit held in Liberia in July. In particular he expressed understanding of the OAU resolution calling for the creation of a multi-national African Army to prevent foreign aggression. President Sekou Toure has upset some western leaders by saying he supported the presence of Cuban troops in Angola, but he had been quick to point out that these troops would not be needed in Africa had its own peacekeeping force.

But President Sekou Toure had devoted most of his visit to the United States to economic rather than political matters. Although Guinea controls vast bauxite reserves and is rich in other minerals, lack of investment has left the country on the verge of collapse. Until recently Guinea was closely aligned to the communist bloc, But heavy debts and disillusionment with the quality of Soviet aid has led to Guinea seeking western favour. In December the French President received a royal welcome in Guinea and Mr. Sekou Toure continued his overtures to the west during a long talk with President Carter in Washington last Wednesday (8 August).
