Background: THE MOSLEM PRESIDENT OF THE ALGERIAN PROVISIONAL EXECUTIVE, M. FARES, WAS RECEIVED BY PRESIDENT DE GAULLE AT THE ELYSEE PALACE, PARIS, APRIL 26 FOR A 55-MINUTE DISCUSSION OF THE TENSE ALGERIAN SITUATION.

LATER, M. FARES SAID HE WOULD LEAVE PARIS AND THE PRESIDENT "MORE CONFIDENT THAN EVER" IN THE FUTURE OF ALGERIA. HE ADDED THAT THE DATE FOR THE REFERENDUM GIVING SELF-DETERMINATION HAD NOW BEEN FIXED AND THAT IT WOULD BE ANNOUNCED IN THE NEAR FUTURE. A CENTRAL AUTHORITY WOULD BE SET UP TO ORGANISM AND CONTROL THE VOTE.

    M. POMPIDOU, THE FRENCH PRIME MINISTER, OUTLINING THE POLICY OF HIS GOVERNMENT TO THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY THAT DAY, SPOKE OF THE COOPERATION HE ENVISAGED BETWEEN THE NEW ALGERIAN REPUBLIC AND FRANCE. AFTER DWELLING ON THE RIGHTS TO BE ENJOYED BY EUROPEANS WHO WISHED TO REMAIN IN ALGERIA, HE SAID: "THE SITUATION IS IN ANY CASE IRREVERSIBLE. THE HOUR FOR REGRETS IS PASSED". BUT HE ASSURED EUROPEANS WHO WISHED TO LEAVE ALGERIA THAT HELP AND FACILITIES FOR RESETTLEMENT IN FRANCE WOULD BE PROVIDED.
