Background: A unit of the Japanese Army is expected to complete a trek across the snow-covered Hakkoda Mountain in Northern Japan on Tuesday (18 Jan).

The soldiers are following the route taken by Imperial soldiers in 1902. On that occasion the trek ended in disaster, with 199 men perishing in the snow.

This time, the unit commander is confident of success. He says his men are carrying the most modern equipment.

It was decided to follow the 1902 route in order "to console the souls of the victims."
