  • Description

Allegations of police brutality have been made by student union officials in Brisbane, Australia, following a demonstration over cuts in education spending on Tuesday (3 August).

SYNOPSIS: The students didn't have a permit to march, but there was no attempt to shop them until they and marched several kilometres. Then the police moved in and tried to take banners and signs away. Scuffles developed and it's from these that the allegations arose.

The marchers broke through and reformed ranks and marched without incident to Brisbane's King George Square. There, about a thousand other people were calling for massive increases in student living allowances.

Student leaders shaking at the rally warned of greater militancy if demands for a higher living wage weren't met. More than 40 uniformed and plain-clothed policemen surrounded the crowd and reinforcements were stationed nearby. An inquiry was ordered in to the brutality allegations, but this was over-ruled by Queensland Premier, John Bjelke-Peterson. Student leaders expressed outrage at the premier's move. they alleged a government "white-wash" of the police force and said students would not sit by idly if such actions continued.
