  • Description

Two races at the Cardiff Stadium, Clive Street, Grangetown - the 'Galloway Handicap Final', showing boys racing on Galloway ponies, and the 'Half Mile Handicap', a 'final' race for four male runners won by No. 3 - H. [Harry] Cullum, which took place on 29/5/1912. Footage shows the competitors prior to the start (the ponies almost impossible to control prior to the off, the runners limbering up), the race itself (men, boys and dogs watch from the stand, adjudicators for the half mile urging on the runners as they approach the end) and the winner (a boy sitting on a quiet pony; H. Cullum triumphant and borne aloft by the crowd, a fellow competitor lying on the ground).
As reported in The South Wales Daily News 30/5/1912, the 40-odd year old Harry Cullum was "well known locally as the best half mile runner Wales has produced" (he won "the Welsh Championship" several times) although "many thought his running days were long gone. ... During later years he has run only intermittently and yesterday's fine victory will create a big surprise in running circles".
