  • Description

THREE BRITISH LABOUR MEMBERS OF THE PARLIAMENT RECEIVED A NOISY RECEPTION AT A PUBLIC MEETING AT A RHODESIAN HOTEL LAST NIGHT (WEDNESDAY). THE MEETING WAS ATTENDED BY AN ESTIMATED TWO HUNDRED MEMBERS OF THE RHODESIAN FRONT, LOYAL TO RHODESIAN'S ILLEGAL LEADER, MR. IAN SMITH.

THE THREE BRITISH POLITICIANS, MR. CHRISTOPHER ROWLAND, MR. DAVID ENNALS AND DOCTOR JEREMY BRAY WERE AT THE MEETING TO ANSWER QUESTIONS ON THE RHODESIA CRISIS.

HOWEVER, THE MEETING SOON BECAME AN OPPORTUNITY FOR HOSTILE ELEMENTS IN THE AUDIENCE TO USE IT AS A PLATFORM FOR ABUSING THE THREE MEN. THERE WERE SHOUTS OF 'LIAR', 'SWINE', 'COMMUNIST' AND OTHER ABUSIVE REMARKS LEVELLED AT THE BRITISH POLITICIANS AS THEY TRIED TO SPEAK.

LATER, THE THREE MEN WERE MANHANDLED AND JOSTLED BY SOME OF THE AUDIENCE, AND MR. ROWLAND WAS DRAGGED ACROSS THE TABLE, KICKED AND DOUSED WITH A JUG OF WATER, POLICE HAD TO ASSIST THE MEN FROM THE HOTEL.

THE ILLEGAL RHODESIAN MINISTRY OF INFORMATION ISSUED A STATEMENT REGRETTING THE INCIDENT, BUT ADDING THAT THE BRITISH POLITICIANS HAD CONTRAVENED LOCAL REGULATIONS AGAINST MEETINGS OF MORE THAN TWELVE PEOPLE.

THE POLITICIANS WILL END THEIR VISIT TO RHODESIA TOMORROW AND WILL THEN GO TO NEIGHBOURING ZAMBIA.
