    For the youngsters of Holland, the magic of Christmas began Nov. 14 as the patron saint and benefactor of children, St.Nicholas, arrived at the fishing village of Scheveningen.

    Dutch children believe that in accordance with ancient tradition, Santa Claus sails from Spain to celebrate his birthday in Holland on Dec. 6th. On the eve of his birthday - Dec. 5 - he gives presents to the children.

    Thousands of youngsters thronged Scheveningen harbour to welcome "Santa Claus" and his entourage of black servants.

    At the Hague, where he stays during the celebrations, 'Santa Claus' was welcomed by the Spanish Ambassador to Holland, the Duke of Baena. The Duke distributed sweets to the crowds of excited children outside his residence.

    St. Nicholas (Sinte Nicolas) who rides on a white horse bestowing gifts to children, lives-according to legend, - in Spain during the summer months. After celebrating his birthday in Holland he returns to his "homeland".
