  • Description

The freighter "Alva Bay" sailed into Bombay November 12 with the eleven-millionth ton of wheat supplied by America under the terms of four agreements concluded since 1965.

In a dockside ceremony, American Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker handed the cargo over to Indian Food Minister Shri S.K. Patil.

During the last four years India has received eleven million tons of wheat, 400,000 tons of rice, 625,000 bales of cotton, 375,000 tons of corn and grain sorghum, 3,000 tons of tobacco and 20,000 tons of milk powder, under the terms of American Public Law 480 agreements whereby surplus products are given to less fortunate nations.

About eighty-five per-cent of proceeds realized from the sale of this consignment -a and further consignments totalling sixteen million tons of wheat and one million ton of rice - will, by and large, be loaned and granted back to the Indian Government for development projects.
