    THE FOURTH ANNUAL MEETING OF THE ASIA DEVELOPMENT BANK OPENED IN SINGAPORE TODAY (THURSDAY). 800 PEOPLE - BANK GOVERNORS AND OFFICIAL DELEGATES - ARE ATTENDING THE THREE-DAY CONFERENCE.

    IT WAS OPENED BY PRESIDENT BENJAMIN SHEARES OF SINGAPORE WHO WAS INTRODUCED BY THE BANK'S PRESIDENT, MR TAKESHI WATANABE, OF JAPAN.

    THE BANK IS MADE UP OF REGIONAL MEMBERS RANGING FROM AFGHANISTAN IN THE WEST TO JAPAN IN THE NORTH, TO AUSTRALIA IN THE SOUTH AND TO SAMOA IN THE EAST. NON-REGIONAL MEMBERS COMPRISE MOST WEST EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AND THE UNITED STATES.

    ONE OF THE MAJOR TOPICS AT THE CONFERENCE WILL BE THE FUTURE EXPANSION OF THE BANK WHOSE MAIN PURPOSE IS TO FINANCE DEVELOPMENT IN ASIAN COUNTRIES.

    IN THE PAST TWO YEARS LOANS BY THE BANK HAVE JUMPED FROM 41 MILLION AMERICAN DOLLARS TO 245 MILLION DOLLARS LAST YEAR.
