Background: West Berlin's Mayor, Herr Willy Brandt, received the "Grand Cross of the Federal Order of Merit" (Verdienstorden der Bundesrepublik) from West-German President Heuss during a ceremony at the president's official residence "Villa Hammerschmidt" in Bonn. The next day, Feb. 5, Herr Brandt and his wife left from nearby Dusseldorf airport for a four week world tour.
Herr Brandt said that the aim of his tour, which will take him to Canada, the U.S.A., Japan and India, was to win new friends for Berlin and to inform as many people as possible on the situation there. He said the Soviet Union had well understood that the Western world would not surrender West Berlin. A unilateral solution of the Berlin problem was not possible without a solution of the German question as a whole. He said he was looking forward to meeting Asian politicians on his tour, as the stand of Asian countries would be of the highest importance during the months to come.
After two days in Canada, Herr Brandt is flying to Washington where he is to meet President Eisenhower.
