Background: The first Ambassador from The People's Republic of China to Australia, Mr. Wang Kuo-ch'uan, arrived in Sydney on Wednesday (9 May) on his way to take up his post in Canberra. Mr. Wang was given an enthusiastic welcome by members of the Chinese community who had gathered at Sydney's Mascot Airport.

There was no official Australian Government welcome at Sydney, but the Australia-China Society expressed greetings and presented flowers to the new ambassador.

Mr. Wang, aged sixty-two, was formerly the Chinese Ambassador to Poland and East Germany. He said through an interpreter that he was happy to be in Australia. The two countries established diplomatic relations soon after Australia's Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam came to power in December last year.

A spokesman for Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday it was unlikely Mr. Wang would be able to move immediately into a leased residence because it was not ready.

Australia's Ambassador to The People's Republic of China, Dr. Stephen Fitzgerald, is already in Peking.

This film contains a sound-on-film welcoming speech by a representative of the Australia-China Society.
