  • Description

The new Pope appeared for the first time October 28, an hour after the Conclave had cast its twelfth ballot.

A quarter of a million people packed St. Peter's Square, eyes turned to the balcony from which the new Pope - 77 year old Cardinal Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, Patriarch of Venice - appeared in the beams of floodlights.

A moment before came the traditional announcement from the balcony: "Habemus Papam" -- "We have a Pope." The crowd intensity vanished. A wave of jubilation unfurled across the Square.

The new Pope, stepped forward in ceremonial vestments, raised his hands to bless them, said the traditional; "Urbi et orbi" (to the city and the world).

The new spiritual ruler of 5 million Catholics is the son of a peasant.

As the Pope his title is John 23rd. He chose the name in memory of his father. He was created Cardinal in 1953. Italians know him as a popular man, devoted to charitable works and non-political.

November 19 is likely to be Pope John's Coronation Day.
