  • Description

AT LAKE EYRE TODAY (19 MAY) DONALD CAMPBELL, MADE THREE MORE TEST RUNS IN BLUEBIRD. IN THE FIRST RUN, CAMPBELL REACHED TWO-HUNDRED-AND-FIFTY MILES AN HOUR. IN ANOTHER RUN, THE TAIL PARACHUTE OF BLUEBIRD WAS TESTED.

LATER, HE REPORTED THE TRACK WAS VERY ROUGH, ESPECIALLY THE LAST FIVE MILES OF THE SEVEN MILE TRIAL COURSE, AND HE SAID HE WOULD WAIT FOR THE DRIEST POSSIBLE TRACK BEFORE HE PUSHED THE BLUEBIRD TO TOP SPEED.

CAMPBELL SAID THE ORIGINAL TRACK, WHICH HAD TAKEN SIX MONTHS TO PREPARE AT A COST OF MANY THOUSANDS OF POUNDS, WAS NOW A WRITE-OFF. THE ALTERNATIVE TRACK WAS SHOWING GREAT RESULTS, BUT IN ADHESIVE VALUE, A SECTION OF IT AT PRESENT WAS LIKE A WET ROAD.

CAMPBELL ALLOWED BLUEBIRD TO BE DRIVEN BY SOMEONE OTHER THAN HIMSELF FOR THE FIRST TIME. THE CAR'S DESIGNER, KEN MORRIS, DROVE IT OVER THE ROUGH PATCHES AND BACK TO THE PROJECT BASE.
