    JAPAN'S GAYEST AND LIVELIEST DANCING - SOME OF IT NOT UNLIKE THE WESTERN "TWIST" - CAN BE SEEN EVERY YEAR AT TOKUSHIMA ON THE SOUTHERN ISLAND OF SHIKOKU. THE ANNUAL FOUR-DAY FESTIVAL, KNOWN AS AWA ODORI, BEGAN LAST WEDNESDAY.

    FILM SHOWS SOME OF THE 10,000 DANCERS - THE MEN WEARING HEADBANDS AND KIMONOS WITH BOLD DESIGNS, THE WOMEN IN PLAIN KIMONOS AND BRAIDED HATS. EVEN THE CHILDREN JOINED IN THE DANCING WHICH ATTRACTED MORE THAN 100,000 TOURISTS FROM MANY PARTS OF THE WORLD.

    (THE AWA ODORI WAS ORIGINALLY HELD TO APPEASE THE GODS AT HARVEST TIME. ODORI IS THE POPULAR STYLE OF JAPANESE DANCING, AS DISTINCT FROM THE CLASSICAL, COURTLY "MAI" AND THE DRAMATIC "FURI". IT HAS BEEN USED FOR AT LEAST FIVE CENTURIES BY THE COMMON PEOPLE AS A FREE AND SPONTANEOUS EXPRESSION OF JOY WITH COMICAL ELEMENTS.)
